Pick a color from an image in three steps
- Add the image. Drag it onto the page, paste it from your clipboard, or choose a file. On a phone, you can take a photo.
- Click the color. A loupe magnifies the pixels under the pointer, so you land on the exact one you mean. Arrow keys nudge it a pixel at a time, and Enter picks.
- Copy what you need. The name and every code have their own copy button.
Most color pickers for images ask you to upload the file. This image color picker reads it where it already is, in your browser, and nothing is stored. Close the tab and the image is gone.
Find the hex code of any color
Every pixel on a screen is three numbers: red, green and blue. A hex code writes them as six digits, two for
each. #3B82F6 is red 59, green 130, blue 246. Pick a pixel and its hex code
comes first in the answer, with RGB, HSL, HSV, CMYK and OKLCH under it.
Already have a code in another format? Type it into the field instead. To see how the digits turn into numbers, step by step, use the HEX to RGB converter.
Name the color, not only the code
"What is this color?" usually asks two things: its exact code, and what to call it. Codes are exact. Names are how people talk about color, so we look up the nearest one in three lists:
- the 148 CSS color names;
- the 949 colors from the xkcd color survey;
- a community collection of over 30,000 names.
An exact match says so. A near one is marked ≈, with the list it came from and the next closest names beside it.
Matching a color from a photo
A photo records the light that reached the camera, and that's what this tool reads. The pixel's color is exact. The object's color is an estimate, because lighting, white balance and your screen all shift it. As a color identifier for paint, fabric or print, use the code as a starting point and check it against a physical swatch. For an even reading, pick a few pixels across the area instead of one.
Chrome extension
Pick colors from any web page
For a color on a website, skip the screenshot. KD Color, our free Chrome extension, is an eyedropper for the page you're on. It uses the same loupe, and shows the hex code, OKLCH, the color's name and the nearest Tailwind colors.

Questions
Is this color picker free?
Yes. There's no account and no limit on images. Color names come from our Color API, which answers up to 25 lookups a minute per visitor; past that, you still get the nearest CSS color name.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is opened and read in your browser. The only thing sent anywhere is the hex code of the color you picked, to look up its name.
Which image formats can I use?
PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, SVG and AVIF, plus HEIC in Safari. For a PDF or a video, take a screenshot and paste it in.
How accurate is the color?
Exact for the pixel you pick, because it's read from the image itself, in sRGB, the color space of the web. Photos are compressed, so neighbouring pixels can differ slightly. Use the loupe to pick one that represents the area.
Can I find a color's name from its hex code?
Yes. Type the code into the field under the image. It takes HEX, RGB, HSL, CMYK, OKLCH and CSS color names.
