Getting Started
Our color API provides programmatic access to color conversion, generation, and manipulation tools. You can convert between color formats, generate color palettes, and analyze color accessibility.
Create a free account, then email m@koval.dev from the same address and we'll send you a key. A self-serve dashboard for keys is on its way.
Any language with an HTTP client. The API is plain REST with JSON responses, so curl, fetch, requests or your favorite library all work.
Yes. The free tier includes 5,000 requests a month at up to 25 requests a minute. No credit card required. You can also call the API without a key at 25 requests a minute per IP address.
Include your API key in the Authorization header. For example: `Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY`. Check our quickstart guide for code examples.
API Usage
We support HEX, RGB, RGBA, HSL, HSLA, OKLCH, OKLAB, CMYK, and many more. Our conversion API can handle almost any color format you need.
Use the `/v1/palette` endpoint with a base color (`value`), a palette `type` (complementary, analogous, triadic, tetradic, monochromatic, tints, shades or tones) and the number of `steps`.
Yes. The `/v1/compare` endpoint returns the WCAG contrast ratio of two colors and whether the pair passes AA for normal text.
The free tier allows 25 requests a minute, with bursts of up to 8, and 5,000 requests a month. Every response includes X-RateLimit headers so you can see how much is left.
Error responses include a standard HTTP status code and a JSON body with details. Common errors include 400 (invalid input), 401 (invalid API key), and 429 (rate limited).
Security
All traffic to the API and the website uses HTTPS. API keys are never stored in plain text: we keep only a SHA-256 hash of each key.
The API runs on Cloudflare, and accounts are managed by Clerk. Our privacy policy lists exactly what we keep and for how long.
Email m@koval.dev and we'll issue a new key and revoke the old one. Self-serve rotation will come with the dashboard.
Yes. Email m@koval.dev and we'll send you a copy of your account data or delete your account and keys.
